As Orlando City prepares to take on DCUnited in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, let’s take a look at all of the matches this round — some of which have already played.
DC United vs. Orlando City SC, Wednesday 7:00pm ET
This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the U.S. Open Cup. Orlando and DC squared off in the first game of 2018, City came back to draw the game 1-1 despite being down a man. The winner of Wednesday’s match will go on to play the Philadelphia Union in the round of 8.
Philadelphia Union - 2 | New York Red Bulls - 1
The Union’s Haris Medunjanin and Coty Burke scored early in the second half to give Philadelphia a convincing lead. The Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips came off the bench and found a goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Union advance to the round of 8.
Atlanta United vs. Chicago Fire, Wednesday 7:30pm ET
It was two completely different stories for Atlanta and Chicago in the 4th round of the U.S. Open Cup. Atlanta cruised past USL side Charleston 3-0, while it took 11 rounds hair-rasing round of a penalty shootout for Chicago to defeat Crew SC.
Louisville City FC vs. Nashville SC, Wednesday 7:00pm ET
The only USL vs. USL matchup of this round should be an intersting one. It pits the defending league champion Louisville against the next MLS expansion team, Nashville SC. Last season, two lower division teams made the round of 8 (Miami FC and FC Cincinnati) with FC Cincinnati making it all the way to the semifinals.
Houston Dynamo - 1 | Minnesota United FC - 0
Mauro Monotas scored the only goal as Houston advanced to the quarterfinal for the third time in the last four years.
Sporting Kansas City - 3 | FC Dallas - 2
Defending Open Cup champs Kansas City prevailed over FC Dallas with a late goal from Yohan Croizet in the 89th minute. Sporting will take on Houston in the Midwest quarterfinal.
LAFC vs. Sacramento Republic FC, Wednesday 10:30pm ET
For two consecutive years Sacramento Republic has knocked off an MLS team on their way to the round of 18. They’ll face expansion side LAFC in the midst of their inaugural Open Cup run.
Portland Timbers - 1 | LA Galaxy - 0
A first half goal from Sebastian Blanco was enough to cary the Timbers to the round of eight. They’ll face the winner of LAFC vs. Sac Republic on Wednesday night.
