MLS Season Mid-Way Point: Where City Stands

2017 midseason review

Fourth In The East

At the beginning of 2017, Jason Kreis clearly identified the goal for Orlando City this season is to compete in the MLS Playoffs. The Lions currently sit fourth out of 11 Eastern Conference teams vying for a playoff spot.

Half-way through the season and on track for the MLS Playoffs, Orlando City are five points better off this year (7-6-5, 26 points) than the team was last year (4-9-5, 21 points).

The Lions, however, have little room for error as Columbus, NY Red Bulls, and MLS newcomers Atlanta United are all within striking distance for a coveted top six position. Orlando City will look to bounce back next weekend at RSL after a bump in the road away to Chicago on Saturday night.

Next weekend’s trip to Salt Lake City will round up Orlando City’s three game road trip as the Lions return to Orlando City Stadium on July 5th to take on Toronto FC  in a pivotal Eastern Conference match.

Defending The Fortress

Remember Orlando City’s thrilling victory over the LA Galaxy back in April? That memorable 2-1 victory - the fourth win in a row to open Orlando City Stadium - set a new MLS record for the most consecutive home wins in a new venue.

The record was the cherry on top of a roaring start to 2017 for the Lions. Impressive victories early on in the season, coupled with a few hard-fought draws, have contributed to Orlando City’s 6-3-1 home record which ranks among the best in MLS.

The Lions have given fans plenty to cheer about this season at Orlando City Stadium; and the fans have certainly done their part. Sellout crowds creating deafening noise and an unrivaled gameday atmosphere gives players that extra bit of motivation to push forward and suffocate the opposition.

Considering how difficult it is to win on the road in this League, home form goes a long way in determining the fate of teams on the playoff bubble. Orlando City have performed well at home this season and will continue to do everything in their power to Defend the Fortress.
