Orlando City and San Jose Play to Emotional 2-2 Draw

ORLANDO, Fla. (June 18, 2016) – In its first Major League Soccer (MLS) game in almost three weeks, Orlando City SC (3-3-8, 17 points) drew the San Jose Earthquakes (5-4-6, 21 points) by a final score of 2-2. Seb Hines and Júlio Baptista scored their second goals of the season in front of the Lions’ biggest crowd since Opening Day. The draw extends Orlando City’s home unbeaten to 14 games, the longest active streak in MLS.

“[The players] worked really, really hard. They never gave in, kept pushing. For me, it’s been probably the most emotional evening I’ve had in football,” Lions Head Coach Adrian Heath said. “I thought the players responded really well. It’s been a great evening for Orlando - not the football club, just Orlando as a city. I think our supporters, I always say it, they never cease to amaze me. We’ve got an incredible supporter base - the best support in the League. They’ve done it again this evening.”

The match was dedicated to the victims of last weekend’s tragic events and there were several tributes throughout the day. The 37,194 in attendance waved rainbow flags and each section of the lower bowl was colored from red to purple, with every color in between. The match was paused in the 49th minute for a moment of silence, and 49 seats were left empty in honor of those lost.

Luke Boden earned his fourth start of the season as Brek Shea moved up to left wing and Kevin Molino moved into center midfield to fill in for captain Kaká.

The Lions came out firing to start the game, controlling long spells of possession while thwarting any San Jose attack. Molino and Cyle Larin looked especially dangerous to start, as both created several threatening opportunities.

Orlando City opened the scoring just moments after its first substitution following a series of corner kicks. Defender Seb Hines headed a ball that would have slipped under the bar had San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham not tipped it out. Then on the ensuing kick, Adrian Winter found Hines again, who struck a header into the top corner on the far post.

The Lions continued pressuring for another goal and held on to their lead for almost 20 minutes, but San Jose equalized in the 86th minute when Shea Salinas lofted a ball to Chad Barrett in the box, who headed it into the back of the net.

Heath again turned to supersubs Júlio Baptista and Carlos Rivas, and again the two changed the game. After several dangerous chances, Rivas served a ball to Baptista in the box. “The Beast” let it bounce and fired a volley into the top corner, deflecting off Bingham’s hands and in.

San Jose pressed for the stoppage time equalizer and found it on the last touch of the game. With the ball bouncing around the edge of the box, Salinas found space and fired it into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Orlando City returns to action on Saturday, June 25, when it hosts Toronto FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.

First Half

3’ Cyle Larin makes a nice flick as he sprints past his defender at midfield, but the Canadian international is unable to split the San Jose defense into the box.

4’ Kevin Molino makes a nice run to earn a free kick 23 yards from the goal. Servando Carrasco drives a right-footed shot just over the bar, skimming the top of the net on its way out of play.

10’ Kevin Molino makes a slick pass through the defender’s legs right to Brek Shea in the box. Shea delivers a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, but no one was there to tap it home.

12’ Servando Carrasco launches the ball into the box for Adrian Winter, who sprints to catch up to it to forcing a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, Carrasco finds Kevin Molino inside the six-yard box on the far post, but the Trinidadian is unable to head it in.

16’ The Lions continue controlling the action as Luke Boden delivers an in-swinging corner kick to Kevin Molino on the far post. Molino serves the ball into the middle, where it bounces around dangerously before being cleared away.

26’ Luke Boden delivers a great ball to Cyle Larin in the area. Larin controls before dropping back to Kevin Molino, who fires a shot from just inside the box that is blocked away.

31’ Luke Boden serves a corner kick to Seb Hines just outside the six-yard box. Hines gets a strong header on it, but the ball goes just inches high of the crossbar.

36’ Adrian Winter makes a dashing run into the box before firing a shot over the bar. Orlando City is outshooting San Jose 7-4, while controlling over 56 percent of possession.

45’ The referee indicates the end of the first half after no additional minutes. The Lions are outshooting the Earthquakes 7-5 while controlling 55.3 percent of possession.

Second Half:

49’ The match is paused to observe a moment of silence in honor of the 49 victims of last weekend’s tragedy in Orlando.

51’ Cyle Larin gets in behind the San Jose back line and dribbles into a box before firing a right-footed shot that is saved out for a corner.

53’ Adrian Winter and Kevin Molino play a nice give-and-go to free Molino in the box. San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham charges out to stop the play.

54’ Cyle Larin feeds Servando Carrasco on the right wing before San Jose defender Victor Bernárdez slides to deflect the ball out for a corner kick.

56’ After a short break, Luke Boden’s corner service is deflected out to Servando Carrasco on the edge of the box, who rips a volley on frame that goalkeeper David Bingham does well to parry away. On the next attack, Kevin Alston fires a shot from distance as the Lions continue putting on the pressure.

61’ Joe Bendik charges out to stop Simon Dawkins’ close-range effort.

65’ Cyle Larin pressures the San Jose backline and forces a corner kick. Adrian Winter crosses a ball in that is deflected out to Servando Carrasco, who heads it back in to Seb Hines. Hines’ headed attempt is tipped away for another corner.

66’ On the next corner kick, Adrian Winter serves the ball in for Seb Hines, who heads it inside the far post on Orlando’s 12th shot of the match.

78’ Both teams make several substitutions. For San Jose, forwards Chad Barrett and Innocent come on for Shaun Francis and Fatai Alashe, respectively, for Orlando, midfielder Antonio Nocerino comes on for forward Larin.

83’ Kevin Molino picks up a loose ball at midfield and sprints into the empty space in front of goal. Goalkeeper David Bingham comes out to cut down the angle, forcing Molino’s shot wide.

85’ Chad Barrett runs onto a Shea Salinas cross and heads a bouncing ball into the net for the equalizer.

87’ Speedy Colombian winger Carlos Rivas enters the match in place of Adrian Winter. It is Rivas’ 11th appearance this season.

90 (+1)’ Carlos Rivas rips a cross to Júlio Baptista in the box. “The Beast” rips a shot off the volley into the back of the net for his second MLS goal. It is Rivas’ second assist of the season.

90 (+4)’ Salinas pounces on a loose ball in front in the box and fires it into the back of the net on the last touch of the match.

90 (+4)’ The referee ends the match after three minutes of added time, with a final score of 2-2.
