Injury Update: Brek Shea, Tony Cascio and Harrison Heath

Injury Update Shea

Several key players are approaching game readiness for the season’s home stretch.

Midfielder and USMNT star Brek Shea is nearing his return. After undergoing surgery for a sports hernia back in July, Shea is finally back on the training grounds doing light running drills. The typical recovery time for this kind of injury is around six to eight weeks, so he’s still a few weeks away. Still, getting Shea back will be a big boost for the Lions.

“He’s pain free. He’s over his operation and I’m hoping by the time we – I think Chicago may come a little early for him, but certainly the game after I think is certainly there’s a really good possibility to get him back down the stretch,” said head coach Adrian Heath during his Coach’s Show on Real Radio 104.1 on Tuesday.

Midfielder Tony Cascio, out with a nagging back injury since March 21, reappeared on the training grounds in good spirits this week. He had a bulged disk in his back, which was pinching a nerve, causing his left leg to go numb at times.

Asked about how long it would take to get back to match fitness, Cascio responded, “Just give me a week. I’m fit. I’m one of the fittest guys on the team when I’m healthy. Naturally, I can get back into shape no problem.”

With the City set to miss a few players due to international call-ups during their final games, Cascio’s return would provide Adrian Heath with another solid option. He’s an experienced MLS veteran who likes to shoot the ball – both of which the Lions need. Cascio said he’s hoping to be back for the Chicago game and if Shea is able to go then, the Lions could have a whole new look.

Young midfielder Harrison Heath is also doing some work on the training grounds. The rookie had made two starts in three appearances this season before going down in the 27th minute of the friendly match against West Brom. He has also been seen around the training grounds doing some light running, but is still at least a few weeks away.

Injuries have been a regular topic during the Lions inaugural season, but the return of some key pieces could provide an excellent end-of-season boost for Orlando City.
