Stats & Storylines
- Orlando City fell Wednesday in heavily controversial fashion for the second time in three seasons in Leagues Cup down in Fort Lauderdale against Inter Miami. After going 1-0 up just before halftime through Marco Pašalić, the Lions were stung first by a non-call on what appeared to be a clear penalty foul by Sergio Busquets against Iván Angulo, then by a harsh penalty call the other way on David Brekalo. To make matters worse, Brekalo was sent off with a second yellow card, following an undeserved first yellow earlier in the night for a phantom hand to the face on Rodrigo de Paul.
- Regardless of how it happened, the loss puts Orlando in a massive Third Place Match on Sunday against the LA Galaxy. The winner will receive the final CONCACAF Champions Cup slot on offer in the tournament. City is looking to qualify for the prestigious competition for the third time in four seasons.
- Both Brekalo and captain Robin Jansson, who was sent off post-match, will be suspended on Sunday. The club is appealing Jansson’s suspension as of the time of this writing.
- PaÅ¡alić’s first half goal was his 14th of the season, now the second-most in a debut season for Orlando City behind Cyle Larin’s 18 in 2015. Orlando City’s Designated Player trio of PaÅ¡alić, MartÃn Ojeda, and Luis Muriel have combined for 45 goals in all competitions in 2025.
- Orlando City will be back at Dignity Health Sports Park for the second time in 11 days, returning to the site of their famous triumph over reigning Liga MX champions Toluca in the Leagues Cup quarterfinal. The game will be the Lions’ fourth consecutive match away from home. From departing for Carson the first time on Monday, August 18 through the return flight on Sunday night, the Lions will have traveled approximately 9,359 air miles and spent eight nights out of 13 in hotels.

Meet the opponent: LA Galaxy
- Toluca wasn’t the only defending champ slain by Orlando City in Carson this year – back in March, the Lions took down the reigning MLS Cup champion Galaxy 2-1 thanks to some late match heroics from Luis Muriel, whose booming free kick spun off the hands of goalkeeper John McCarthy and into the back of the net in the 90th minute.
- Orlando is a perfect 3-0-0 against the Galaxy under Oscar Pareja, having also won in Carson in 2022 and at home in 2023. 2025 will mark the first time Orlando and LA have met twice in the same year or outside of the MLS regular season.
- Despite a tremendously difficult MLS campaign that has seen them reside at the bottom of the table for the grand majority of the season, the Galaxy finished third on the MLS side of the Leagues Cup standings, taking a point off powerhouse Cruz Azul and padding their goal difference with blowout wins over Club Tijuana and Santos Laguna. LA defeated Pachuca in the quarterfinal round before bowing out of the semis against the Seattle Sounders.
- Marco Reus (5g/9a), Joseph Paintsil (5g/2a), and Gabriel Pec (5g/5a) lead the Galaxy in scoring for the MLS regular season. Paintsil, who made his season debut earlier this year against Orlando after recovering from a quad injury, has added three goals in Leagues Cup, while Reus and Pec have two apiece. U22 Initiative striker Matheus Nascimento has 3g/1a in Leagues Cup to go along with 3g/3a in the regular season.
