Brek Shea has always played a diverse amount of roles in the Orlando City lineup. He switched between left back and left winger throughout his career at Orlando City, but seems to have found a permanent home in the midfield under Head Coach Jason Kreis. For Shea, the preseason is the start of a new year and another chance to prove himself as a leader of this squad.

“I think every year as a player is a new year and another chance to prove yourself,” Shea said after training on Wednesday. “Me and the team are ready to do that.”

Shea stayed in Orlando during the offseason, working with some of his teammates in training. Shea said that he feels more fit at the start of this season than he did last year, and he thinks the overall fitness level of the team has improved.

“I ended the year last year with a little injury. I stayed here doing rehab and working out with the guys, and I think it will help the team as a whole,” Shea said. “We spent a lot of time getting ready and preparing for this year.”

As for his injury, Shea said he feels great.

“I feel better than I have in a really long time, going into a season,” Shea said. “I’m really excited.”

Shea’s also optimistic about the roster changes in the offseason, including the acquisition of veteran players like Danny Toia, Will Johnson, and Jonathan Spector. “We have some new faces, some very experienced players in the league,” Shea said. “I think that will be a big part of the team.”

Shea shared the same mentality that Cyle Larin and Kaká showed in recent weeks. “I just want to help the team,” he said. “I want the team to make it to the playoffs, and if I can be part of that, that’s awesome.”

“I’m more than ready. I think, so are a lot the guys on the team,” Shea said. “We’re all excited to get going.”
