Notable Quotables | Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union

Orlando City SC Head Coach Oscar Pareja

Opening statement

“First of all, let me congratulate this group of players. They had a great effort today to bounce back and they even deserved to win it. They decided from the first minute to be protagonists of the game and I think they did that. We had another experience where we were down in the score and we bounced back quickly and that just tells us that the team has personality and desire and that made us feel very confident. They played against a very good team also, [Philadelphia are] well-coached and very dynamic in the middle, but at the end we’re content. We were the protagonists of the game and we wanted it all of the way and could have deserved more, but we’ll take the point. To qualify as the first of the group is something to be proud of.”

On if he feels he’s accomplished his mission of moving the team forward

“It’s a day-by-day thing. We have the desire and the commitment. We’re creating a culture here, the players are creating a culture also, but it’s something that is daily work. We are very proud of the job that they have done in these three games because they’ve shown consistency. It’s not just one game, but has been three with three very good teams and we’re believing in what we’re doing. Step by step we’ll keep growing and we have the commitment with our fans and with the Club and the players and we’re proud.”

On continuing to press late in the match

“Look, this is some of the aspects that we need to highlight from what the players have been doing. We guide and give them the structure that they need, but they are the ones who control their heart for the game. I believe that since the first minute they wanted to win the game and until the 96th minute they wanted even more. In the locker room they were unhappy with the result and this makes us feel that they have the initiative the entire time. This is their initiative and their heart from a group who is growing a lot.”

On how the mindset changes heading into the knockouts

“We are taking it one step at a time, this is our way of building up. The players know that they will rest tomorrow, they will create their own objectives and we will just guide them. We have a team with a lot of desire, goals and I will say it again, they are getting stronger and we will face the next game with a different objective. During this first phase we wanted to accumulate the majority of points for the regular season and qualify in first [place], which we have accomplished. Now we will play one game at a time during the knockout phase.”

Orlando City SC Midfielder Mauricio Pereyra

On the buildup to his goal

“First of all, it was a good night. I don’t think we deserved the goal in our net. From the first minute of the second half, we wanted to impose and get the three points, but I think after we conceded the goal we started with the same energy that we started the second half. We got a good combination and then I know that when [Luis] Nani gets the ball, something different can happen and I went inside the box feeling that this ball was coming for me and thanks to God that it was like that. I’m very happy to score my first goal in Orlando.”

Orlando City SC Midfielder Uri Rosell

On what feels different from the past years

“I believe that we worked very hard during the preseason and even during the pandemic because we knew that we would have tough games ahead. The truth is that the entire coaching staff provided us with all we needed in order to get ready. Tactically, I believe that we improved a lot and we are in a very solid position every time we step on the pitch. Today we really wanted to win this game. We knew that we would be first [in Group A] with a tie but we wanted to win. Each time that we step on the pitch we will give it all to win every game and also because the points will count towards the regular season.”

On containing Brenden Aaronson and Kacper Przybylko

“Honestly before the game, we knew that they were very good players. They know what they’re doing and they had success in the last games, so we really focused on ourselves first, but then keeping an eye on them and putting the work in. I think at the end when you are well-organized and everybody gives their best and they know their role, things come through.”

On what has changed from a year ago to earn these come from behind results

“I think that there are a lot of things that have changed and I can point out one. We are a much better team, obviously the results show that but I feel like when you watch the games you can see the consistency and you can see that we are improving every day. At the end, those are different times but right now I feel like we are in a good spot and every day that we play we feel better, we gain more confidence and today we showed that. Even with a tie that was good [result] for us, we wanted to win. We had the chances, we didn’t capitalize it but that’s our mentality. I think our mentality is getting better every day.”
