This Week in Orlando City History | June 1st-7th

Notable Matches

June 6, 2015 at Chicago Fire - Orlando City rallied from a goal down in the final ten minutes to beat Chicago on the road five years ago this week. Cyle Larin leveled the game for Orlando in the 82nd minute with a screaming banger:

Chicago center back Adailton had a nightmare game with two own goals, including what would be the game winner for Orlando City on a centering pass from Carlos Rivas. The win was Orlando’s first ever against an Eastern Conference opponent.

June 4, 2017 vs. Chicago Fire - This game between Orlando and Chicago was a fairly standard affair until the 26th minute, when referee Ted Unkel gave an erroneous red card to Lions right back Rafael Ramos. While the card would later be rescinded by the league, it left Orlando in a terrible pickle on the night, compounded when Antonio Nocerino was sent off in the 66th. With 10 men for 40 minutes and only nine for the last half hour, Orlando City battled heroically and held the Fire off the scoreboard for a 0-0 draw.

June 1, 2019 at Montreal Impact - Nani scored the 100th goal of his career as Orlando went up to Canada and smashed Montreal 3-0 last season. The captain hit the century mark on a penalty kick to give the Lions the lead in the 27th minute, but it was the team’s third goal that made headlines, with a 22-pass sequence that led to a driving Will Johnson header.

Notable Moments

Orlando’s Camping World Stadium played host to two Copa América Centenario games this week in 2016. Costa Rica and Paraguay battled to a 0-0 draw on June 4, while Panama defeated Bolivia 2-1 on June 6. Blas Pérez, who starred for current Orlando City head coach Oscar Pareja at FC Dallas and scored over 300 goals for club and country in his career, had a brace to lead the Panamanians.

Here’s a look at Exploria Stadium construction from this week in 2016. Three-quarters of the grandstand had vertical steel at this point, with more construction completed on the loading dock and back-of-house areas.

This tandem save from Jonathan Spector and Joe Bendik during the 0-0 Chicago draw in 2017 was so good, it was added to MLS Save of the Week voting after the poll had been posted.

Nani seemed genuinely touched after scoring his 100th career goal against Montreal last year.
