Pride Abroad 14

It was a big weekend in the W-League, with Round 14 results securing the playoff picture and setting up a battle of Pride players in the semifinal round. Meanwhile in Spain, Monica and Atlético Madrid looked to extend its point streak to six games.

Take a look back at the weekend that was:

W-League (Australia): Round 14

Melbourne City FC 3, Newcastle Jets 0 (recap / highlights)
It was a win-and-in situation for Alanna Kennedy and Melbourne City FC this weekend, and the back-to-back W-League champion made no qualms about it, shutting out Newcastle 3-0 to book its ticket to the semifinal round. Jodie Taylor (Seattle Reign FC) scored her first goal in City colors in the 29th minute, collecting a ball inside the box and chipping over the keeper.

Lauren Barnes (Seattle Reign FC) setup City’s next two goals, first sending in a 33rd minute set piece to the head of Aivi Luik to make it 2-0. Just before the first half closed, Barnes served a ball to Yukari Kinga who posted the third and final goal of the match.

Brisbane Roar 4, Canberra United 1 (recap / highlights)
Led by two assists from newly-acquired Pride defender Carson Pickett, Brisbane Roar solidified its position atop the table on Sunday with a comfortable 4-1 win over Toni Pressley, Haley Kopmeyer and Canberra United. In the 11th minute, Pickett sent a ball in that took a favorable bounce off Pressley before Brisbane’s Hayley Raso (Portland Thorns FC) knocked the ball in. Five minutes before halftime, Pickett’s left foot led to the Roar’s second goal, this time finding Emily Gielnik on a near post run.

Abbey Lloyd scored Brisbane’s final two goals, while Canberra’s lone goal was scored by Elise Thorsnes, a golazo from distance. Kopmeyer finished the match with four saves.
