Since he was traded to Orlando City in July, Dom Dwyer has been working to break the seal of his Orlando City scoring account. After seven games played in a purple uniform, he was finally able to break through, twice. Dwyer was involved in all three goals scored by Orlando in the wild 3-3 draw against Atlanta United, in front of a record MLS crowd this past Saturday. Two headed goals and one assist to Cyle Larin for the third.
Coming into the match against Atlanta, Dwyer had a mission: Be the first to score an away goal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “Obviously, I knew that going into this game no one had scored here yet, so I wanted to be the first person to score,” Dwyer said. “It’s cool to do it in a new stadium against a good club. We’ll build on it from today and move onto the next game.”
In the last two matches for the Lions, Dwyer has notched two goals and two assists. Both assists have gone to Dwyer’s strike partner, Cyle Larin. Both strikers have had only four games where they have started together, but the partnership between the two continues to grow with every match.
“It’s always growing,” Dwyer said of the partnership. “We’re guys that like to work off each other. We’re still learning how each other moves but that will just get better with more games. It’ll be something that blossoms throughout the season and into next year.”
Now that he’s got the proverbial monkey off his back, Dom will be looking to add to his goal scoring tally in purple come this coming weekend.
