Around MLS: Most Important Matchups After Gold Cup Break

Around MLS Gold CUp

MLS returns to action this week after taking a two-week break for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Here is a look at some of the top matches this weekend:

New York City FC vs. Toronto FC-- Wednesday, July 19th at 7:30pm

With Toronto FC No. 2 in the Eastern Conference, and New York City FC No. 3, this midweek match could earn both sides some critical points. If Toronto wins, they overtake Chicago and reclaim their top-spot in the Eastern Conference and the league. If New York City FC win, it puts them closer to the top of the table and a potential contender for the Shield race.

Orlando City vs. Atlanta United-- Friday, July 21st at 7:30pm

Orlando City will host Atlanta United for the first action this season between the two Southeastern sides. Atlanta United sit just one point ahead of Orlando City in the Eastern Conference standings, and Orlando will be looking to correct that on Friday night. If Atlanta wins, it could legitimize their run for the playoffs. If Orlando wins, their playoff narrative also becomes more secure.

New York City FC vs. Chicago Fire-- Saturday, July 22nd at 2:00pm

Again, this match will see two of the top Eastern Conference teams pitted against each other. Neck-and-neck with Toronto, Chicago will be looking to take points and help lift them to the No. 1 slot in the league. If New York City FC can find points against both Chicago and Toronto, they could reach the No. 1 slot and solidify their role as one of the best teams in the league.

Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes-- Sunday, July 23rd at 10:30pm

The defending MLS Cup champions currently sit below the playoff line, but they are tied in points with the No. 6 Vancouver Whitecaps and they are only two points behind the No. 5 San Jose Earthquakes. A win for Seattle lifts them above the playoff line, whereas a win for San Jose puts them in 3rd place in the Western Conference.
