ORLANDO, Fla. (June 18, 2016) â In its first Major League Soccer (MLS) game in almost three weeks, Orlando City SC (3-3-8, 17 points) drew the San Jose Earthquakes (5-4-6, 21 points) by a final score of 2-2. Seb Hines and JĂşlio Baptista scored their second goals of the season in front of the Lionsâ biggest crowd since Opening Day. The draw extends Orlando Cityâs home unbeaten to 14 games, the longest active streak in MLS.
â[The players] worked really, really hard. They never gave in, kept pushing. For me, itâs been probably the most emotional evening Iâve had in football,â Lions Head Coach Adrian Heath said. âI thought the players responded really well. Itâs been a great evening for Orlando - not the football club, just Orlando as a city. I think our supporters, I always say it, they never cease to amaze me. Weâve got an incredible supporter base - the best support in the League. Theyâve done it again this evening.â
The match was dedicated to the victims of last weekendâs tragic events and there were several tributes throughout the day. The 37,194 in attendance waved rainbow flags and each section of the lower bowl was colored from red to purple, with every color in between. The match was paused in the 49th minute for a moment of silence, and 49 seats were left empty in honor of those lost.
Luke Boden earned his fourth start of the season as Brek Shea moved up to left wing and Kevin Molino moved into center midfield to fill in for captain KakĂĄ.
The Lions came out firing to start the game, controlling long spells of possession while thwarting any San Jose attack. Molino and Cyle Larin looked especially dangerous to start, as both created several threatening opportunities.
Orlando City opened the scoring just moments after its first substitution following a series of corner kicks. Defender Seb Hines headed a ball that would have slipped under the bar had San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham not tipped it out. Then on the ensuing kick, Adrian Winter found Hines again, who struck a header into the top corner on the far post.
The Lions continued pressuring for another goal and held on to their lead for almost 20 minutes, but San Jose equalized in the 86th minute when Shea Salinas lofted a ball to Chad Barrett in the box, who headed it into the back of the net.
Heath again turned to supersubs JĂşlio Baptista and Carlos Rivas, and again the two changed the game. After several dangerous chances, Rivas served a ball to Baptista in the box. âThe Beastâ let it bounce and fired a volley into the top corner, deflecting off Binghamâs hands and in.
San Jose pressed for the stoppage time equalizer and found it on the last touch of the game. With the ball bouncing around the edge of the box, Salinas found space and fired it into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Orlando City returns to action on Saturday, June 25, when it hosts Toronto FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
First Half

56â After a short break, Luke Bodenâs corner service is deflected out to Servando Carrasco on the edge of the box, who rips a volley on frame that goalkeeper David Bingham does well to parry away.
