Orlando City Jump Six Spots in MLS Power Rankings

Power Rankings

It was a perfect set of circumstances for Orlando City to make an impression on Sunday night. Adrian Heath had a fully healthy roster, their captain returned, and it was all broadcasted on national TV. With a 4-1 win over the defending MLS Cup champions, it surely looks like the Lions made their mark.

In this week’s Power Rankings published by MLSsoccer.com, Orlando City shot up six spots from twelve to six - passing New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers, and the LA Galaxy to name a few.

Here is what MLSsoccer.com had to say about Orlando’s performance.

Kaka was awesome, as was Cristian Higuita. Let's also give a bit of applause to Joe Bendik, who produced a couple of big saves from the run of play as well as a clutch PK stop.

It was clear to see on Sunday night that Orlando City will be a force to be reckoned with this season. You saw goals from set pieces, Kaká’s creativity, Molino playing like his old self, and some finishing from Brek Shea. This is a team that, as Adrian Heath said last week, can compete with anyone in the league.

Orlando City’s expanded depth is something to focus on when you look at the team’s long term outlook. With names like Antonio Nocerino, Julio Baptista, and Carlos Rivas coming off the bench, you’ve got some late game punch as well as durability for the long season.

Orlando City will play on national TV again this Friday night as they take on the Philadelphia Union on the road for the rights to first place in the Eastern Conference.
