After being selected in the third round (43rd overall pick), Edwards Jr. showed his tremendous potential after training under the guidance of veteran MLS goalkeepers Donovan Ricketts and Tally Hall. Although the San Diego native did not make an MLS appearance, he was able to show his talent in U.S. Open Cup and friendly matches.
On May 2, he played the entire friendly against Brazilian side Ponte Preta, saving a penalty kick. On June 17, he was key in the Lions’ qualification to the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup, making key saves throughout the 120 minutes and the penalty kick shootout. On July 15, he played the second half of the friendly against English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, keeping a clean sheet. On August 25, he played the entire friendly fixture versus Louisville City FC, making terrific saves during the 90 minutes.
