Here are five storylines to watch on Wednesday as the Lions go on the road to take on the Five Stripes:
Cleaning Up
The Lions’ defense has been among the best in MLS so far in the 2025 campaign. Despite giving up 12 goals in their first six matches, Orlando City has only conceded five times since then, registering all seven of its clean sheets this season in that span, which is tied for most in MLS with Minnesota United FC. All seven of the Lions’ clean sheets have been kept by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, who now sits just three shy of equaling his season high in MLS regular season action, pushing the Peruvian into a tie with Minnesota’s Dayne St. Clair for most in MLS by an individual keeper.
Lions Continuing to Launch
Orlando City’s attack has continued to fly high so far in 2025, and the Club will look to continue that form heading into its midweek matchup against its rivals to the North, Atlanta United FC. The Lions have scored at least twice in 11 of their 17 matches across all competitions this season, scoring three or more goals in seven of those 11 contests. The Lions have scored the third-most goals in the league (28) overall, trailing only the Philadelphia Union (30) and the San Jose Earthquakes (32) and have received 28 total goal contributions from their Designated Players Luis Muriel, Martín Ojeda and Marco Pašalić this season.
Dancing Duncan
2023 MLS SuperDraft selection Duncan McGuire found himself back on the scoresheet in the Lions’ 1-0 shutout win over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night, slotting home the game-winner in the 39th minute to open his 2025 MLS account. The goal was McGuire’s 28th all-time for the Lions across all competitions since the Omaha, Nebraska, native was selected sixth overall by Orlando in 2023, bringing him just three goals shy of tying former captain Nani (31) for third on the Lions’ all-time scoring charts. McGuire also scored against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Lions’ 5-0 win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup earlier this month.
May of Mayhem
Wednesday night’s matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be Orlando City’s eighth match in 25 days in the month of May, with one additional match to play before the month is out, marking what is currently set to be one of the busiest portions of the Lions’ 2025 campaign. In the seven matches they have played thus far this month, the Lions have posted a 4-1-2 record across all competitions, scored 17 goals and only conceded seven times for a +10-goal differential in that span. Despite their loss in the U.S. Open Cup to Nashville, the Lions remain on a 12-game unbeaten run in league action, dating back to March 15.
Not ‘Lanta’
Wednesday night will be the second and final meeting between Orlando City and Atlanta United in the 2025 MLS regular season after the two sides met at Inter&Co Stadium at the end of April. That match saw City dominate on both sides of the ball, as the Club put three past goalkeeper Brad Guzan behind strikes from Luis Muriel, Marco Pašalić and Alex Freeman, while defensively, the Lions kept the Five Stripes’ attack from placing a single shot on target in the 3-0 result.
Milestone Tracker:
- Duncan McGuire (28) sits fourth on Orlando City’s all-time scoring list and is three goals away from tying former captain Nani (31) across all competitions for third.
- A win or draw would extend the Lions’ league unbeaten streak to 13 matches in MLS action and set a new club record for longest unbeaten run all-time.
