Orlando Pride forward Marta and defender Ali Krieger have been named to the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Best XI, it was announced today.

“This is a well-deserved recognition for both Marta and Ali,” Head Coach Tom Sermanni said.  “Both players have been incredible leaders and catalysts for our team, both on and off the pitch, and I’m delighted they are receiving this honor for their tremendous week-in and week-out performances this season."

Marta joined Orlando in a blockbuster signing in March and immediately made an impact. The five-time FIFA World Player of the Year’s creativity and ability on the ball sparked the Pride attack, and she finished second in the league with 13 goals and six assists, both of which led the team. Marta and forward Alex Morgan created one of the most formidable duos in the league, combining to create five goals during the Pride’s nine-game unbeaten run to finish the season. Marta also took on a mentoring role for 23-year-old Brazilian midfielder Camila, helping the third-year pro become an impact player for both the Pride and the Brazil national team.

Marta was named to the NWSL Team of the Month each month from June through September, earned September NWSL Player of the Month and won Week 18 Goal of the Week.

After signing with Orlando on Nov. 2, 2016, Krieger was the only Pride player to appear in all 2,250 minutes in the regular and postseason. The U.S. Women’s National Team defender brought her veteran leadership and outstanding defensive skills to the Orlando Pride back line. Krieger’s addition played a major role in the transformation of the Pride defense, while her versatility contributed to much of Orlando’s success. Naturally a right back, Krieger started all but five games at the center back position. In that role, the 2015 World Cup champion led the Pride in clearances (99), interceptions (49) and successful passes (1,073).

Krieger also added two assists and has reached the NWSL playoffs each of her last four years in the league, helping the Pride to their first postseason appearance in 2017.

Pride teammates Morgan and Steph Catley were named to the NWSL Second XI on Tuesday.

The NWSL awards are voted on by club officials, players, fans and media that cover the league on a consistent basis.
