Orlando City Falls at Philadelphia in Season Finale

Union Recap

CHESTER, Pa. (October 22, 2017) – In its 2017 regular season finale, Orlando City SC (10-15-9, 39 points) fell 6-1 to the Philadelphia Union (11-14-9, 42 points) Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium.

“Tonight was the last bit of an evaluation from our point of view as to what we need to do, what areas of the field we need to address, what particular players we think we need to keep,” Lions head coach Jason Kreis said. “Now we enter into the very difficult and trying time of the offseason where we’ve got to deliver a lot of difficult messages and have a lot of work to do to find new players.”

Earl Edwards, Jr., City’s third-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, made his MLS debut in place of Joe Bendik, who was unavailable while undergoing the MLS concussion protocol with Orlando Health Sports Medicine team doctors. The defenders were PC, Léo Pereira, Seb Hines and Scott Sutter. In the midfield were Dillon Powers, Yoshimar Yotún with the captain’s armband and Richie Laryea, who made his first career MLS start. Giles Barnes, Dom Dwyer and Carlos Rivas were the forwards.

Ilsinho, Fabrice-Jean Picault and CJ Sapong scored two goals apiece for Philadelphia. Dom Dwyer scored his fourth MLS goal for City on Yotún’s fourth assist.

City’s third MLS season saw the Lions open Orlando City Stadium with five consecutive victories - the most to open a stadium in MLS history. Cyle Larin finishes as the team’s leading scorer with 12 goals; Kaká and Carlos Rivas tie for the most assists with five.

The Lions will return to Orlando City Stadium one final time in 2017 on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Fuerza Puerto Rico Friendly presented by Audi of Central Florida dealers. All proceeds of the friendly against the Puerto Rico national team will go toward the United For Puerto Rico fund for hurricane relief efforts.
