Orlando City Defeated By New England on the Road

NE REcap

FOXBORO, Mass. (July 27, 2019) - Orlando City SC (7-11-5, 26 points) dropped a 4-1 decision on the road on Saturday night, falling to the New England Revolution (9-8-6, 33 points) at Gillette Stadium.

The home side held the lead throughout, with Tesho Akindele scoring his seventh goal of the season to end the Revolution’s shutout bid in the 77th minute.

Head Coach James O’Connor:
“I think the biggest thing is we needed to start both halves way better than we did. After two or three minutes in the first half we’re a goal down, to start the second half we needed to start sharper. We spoke about some of the things that they would try to do. ...The big moments tonight haven’t gone for us but, again, we’ve created a lot of chances, haven’t taken them and then in the key moments defended really poorly. So it’s a bad mix and something that we need to rectify because we have been defending really well, we have been creating chances and we’ve done a decent enough job of trying to be clinical. But tonight we weren’t clinical and then [made] some mistakes which we were punished for."

Scoring Recap:

3’ Gustavo Bou (Edgar Castillo) - NE 1, ORL 0
The Revolution took an early lead just three minutes into the game after a give-and-go between Gustavo Bou and Edgar Castillo. Bou played Castillo with a backheel pass, before Castillo returned the ball to Bou running through a lane in the box where the midfielder was able to make it 1-0.

47’ Cristian Penilla (Brandon Bye) - NE 2, ORL 0
The home side started the second half as it did the first, with a goal in the opening minutes. This time, Cristian Penilla broke through to double the Revs’ lead, pouncing on a crossed ball near the penalty spot.

60’ Carles Gil (PK) - NE 3, ORL 0
After the Revolution were awarded a penalty kick off of a hand ball by Sebastián Méndez, Carles Gil converted from the spot, sending a finish into the left side of the net.

75’ Diego Fagundez (Carles Gil) - NE 4, ORL 0
The Revolution put the game away with Diego Fagundez trying his luck from right outside the area, sending a shot into the top left corner of the net from the right side off the fingertips of Brian Rowe.

77’ Tesho Akindele (Dom Dwyer, Nani) - NE 4, ORL 1
The Lions got one back with Nani finding Dom Dwyer in behind the New England defense, who cut it back at the end line across the face of goal to Tesho Akindele. Akindele roofed it for the first-time finish to cut the New England lead to three.
