By The Numbers: Streaking

198btn2021

7 - Zero in the loss column

Orlando City’s 3-2 victory last Saturday night over the Columbus Crew pushed its current unbeaten run to seven MLS games in a row. The streak is the second-longest in club history. Orlando went 12 games without a loss from August 26 to October 18 last season. The current team could surpass that record if it manages to avoid defeat through the match with D.C. United on October 2.

6 - Unbeaten in the rivalry, too

The current seven-game run isn’t the only undefeated streak on the line for Orlando City this week. Friday night opponent Atlanta United has failed to defeat City in six consecutive games, going back to last August 29, when Orlando demolished Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Orlando City won the teams’ last meeting on July 30, coming from behind twice to take all three points in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Silvester van der Water scored the equalizer and assisted Nani’s game-winner after entering the game off the bench.

20 - Bangin’ goal

Daryl Dike’s meteoric rise keeps churning out goals and wins. The Orlando City forward scored his 20th career goal for the Club on Saturday night, in what was his 50th career senior appearance. Dike has scored 11 goals in 28 matches for Orlando City, tallying nine in 22 appearances for Barnsley during his loan to the English side earlier this year. Dike has also scored three goals in eight appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team.

3 - Revolving door

Friday night’s match will mark the third time Orlando and Atlanta have played in 2021, and the game will feature a third different head coach for the Five Stripes. Gabriel Heinze was in charge for the two sides’ 0-0 Opening Day draw on April 17, but he was dismissed after just 13 matches in charge on July 18. Former Orlando City player Rob Valentino took over as Atlanta’s interim coach and managed the side for that 3-2 City win on July 30. After being appointed permanent head coach on August 12, former Seattle Sounders assistant Gonzalo Pineda will command the technical area for Atlanta on Friday.
