Academy Teams Collect Five Wins in Successful Weekend

Academy Update 11/19

This past weekend proved to be one of the most successful of the season for City’s USSDA clubs, as all three clubs won in dominating fashion.

In its away fixture against Tampa Bay United, the U-14 academy team produced a strong 3-1 victory. The win showcased excellent defensive performances, led by center backs D’Anthony Brown and Mason Lamb, while Jordan Bender continued his fine form with a brace. Lastly, Daniel Miranda added the third goal to improve the team’s league record to 4-1-1.

"Our players are showing a big commitment to winning the ball quickly and also creating and capitalizing on scoring opportunities,” said U-14 Head Coach Greg Brick. “We look to continue to improve on our performances each week as our players are consistently challenged in each game which provides an excellent environment for growth."

The weekend for the U-16s was arguably the best of their season so far, as they slotted home nine goals and kept clean sheets in both of their matches. In the opening match, the Lions dispatched the visiting Carolina Rapids with ease, winning 6-0. The U-16s followed Saturday’s performance with another clinical showing on Sunday, defeating Charlotte Soccer Academy 3-0.

“The team put together two solid performances over the weekend,” said Assistant Coach Darren Powell.  “We were able to score some good team goals and have good possession in the opposition’s half on both days. The team worked hard throughout the weekend and it showed in the results.”

Much like the younger Academy teams, the U-18’s proved to be the stronger on the weekend. The Lions started their weekend out in ruthless fashion with seven goals in their first match, leading to a convincing 7-1 victory over Carolina Rapids. Sunday’s match was closely contested as the Lions secured a deserving 1-0 win in the last minutes of the match against Charlotte Soccer Academy.

“The team got off to a good start in the game on Saturday and played some good soccer in possession to jump into a 6-1 lead at the half,” stated Head Coach Darren Powell. “On Sunday the team played well against a well-organized Charlotte team. We were pleased that the players remained persistent and committed throughout the game to grab a late winner.”

All teams will be back in action next weekend as the U-14s play Saturday in Sanford against IMG Academy. Following that game, the U-14s will resume play in February. The U-16s and U-18s have begun preparing for the U.S. Soccer Showcase that begins on December 4th at Lakewood Ranch Florida.
