Preseason Notebook: “Richie Cam” Craze; Eyes on the Olympics

Richie Cam

“Richie Cam” began as a joke, but has now taken on a life of its own, becoming a staple with Orlando City.

With a simple tweet from Scott Sutter or a lengthy Instagram story from Dom Dwyer, “Richie Cam” captures Orlando City midfielder Richie Laryea in a variety of situations, in training, in the hotel room and even while relaxing in front of the television.

“I just got into the van in one of the preseason trainings, I think it was the second day and Dom had his phone out videotaping and he called it Richie Cam,” said Laryea. “The rest is history after that.”

Utilizing cunning camera skills, Laryea is often time caught off guard, first with a look of shock appearing on his face, quickly turning into a wide smile as he lets out a soft chuckle, choosing to see it as an entertaining joke, one that even he enjoys.

“It’s all just fun and games that Dom and Scott are having right now,” said Laryea. “They’ve been catching me on anything and everything on the internet.”

For resident filmers Sutter and Dwyer, it is just as much about the pursuit as it is about the end result, taking every opportunity they get to capture Laryea for the rest of the world to see.

When it comes to Richie Cam no space is safe.

“I’m on edge always,” said Laryea “I’m making sure i’m not doing anything dumb that they can catch on camera.”

Eyes on the Olympics

As the men of Orlando City continue to gear up for their season to begin, the world has turned its attention to Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the 2018 Winter Olympics and the Lions are no exception.

The events in the Winter Olympics offer a stark contrast to soccer and the sunny weather in Orlando, capturing the eye of those watching, including Orlando City defender Scott Sutter.

“Obviously coming from Switzerland, I like the skiing, the downhill, the slalom, even the free skiing, the halfpipe, stuff like that, it’s a big part of Swiss culture,” explained Sutter. “Those things I kind of keep an eye out for.”

Between training and the time difference, the Olympics are not on as much as the players would like them to be; however, when given the chance, Sutter will click on for a quick update and to stay up to date with what is going on halfway around the world.

“I haven’t caught much of it. More so because of the time difference, I’m still trying to figure out when and what time stuff is on,” said Sutter. “Every now and then I’ll switch on and have a look. I am informed about it.”
