The U.S. Open Cup is in its 104th year and is the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world. Teams from every level of the American soccer pyramid are eligible to compete in the single-game elimination tournament.

Major League Soccer (MLS) teams enter the tournament in the fourth round. The winner of the tournament is awarded the Sir Thomas Dewar Cup, prize money and a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League - where the best teams of the North America, Central America and the Caribbean face off. The winner of the CONCACAF Champions League goes on to battle the world’s best sides in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Orlando City has enjoyed success in past U.S. Open Cups. In 2013, the Lions, then in USL Pro, won three matches, including two against MLS sides, to advance to the quarterfinals. City advanced further than any other USL PRO side that year. The Lions also advanced to the quarterfinals in 2015, their first year in MLS.
