This past weekend the U-14 USSDA team took part in the United States Soccer Federation’s Winter Showcase in North Carolina, as the young Lions showcased their talent against other top teams from around the country.

The U-14s had a frustrating opening game against the U-14 New York Red Bulls’ team in which City created the majority of the chances throughout the game but were unable to capitalize. The Lions produced a goal from Besufikad Cushen in the 33rd minute of play, however the Red Bulls managed to score three goals from three chances created.

"The match with the Red Bulls was one of the highest level matches I have seen in some time,” said Head Coach Greg Brick. “Both teams were very good with the big difference being the Red Bulls capitalizing on their handful of opportunities where we didn’t. A wide open attacking style from both teams made it a very exciting match."

The second match the day saw the Lions face Bethesda Olney. Although Orlando controlled the majority of the match with a 2-1 advantage, Bethesda Olney managed to equalize in the waning moments of the game for a 2-2 final score.

"Bethesda had several midfielders who were very quick and technical who posed some problems for us,” explained Head Coach Greg Brick. “However, we were dynamic getting forward and created several very good opportunities and scored two great goals."

For the final match of the Winter Showcase, the Lions faced the Philadelphia Union’s U-14s. The Union scored early in the game from a deflected free kick just outside the box, but the Lions quickly responded with a header from Jordan Bender off a Danny Miranda corner. The match ended with another flurry of goals with the Union scoring late. City once again responded with an equalizer from Beto Ydrach’ free-kick, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.

"Our players displayed a high level of football this weekend competing against the very best in the country,” concluded Head Coach Greg Brick. “We exhibited a very quick passing oriented possession game with a great spirit to get forward and score goals. Playing in matches as we did over the weekend put the players to the test to attack, defend and transition quickly. They showed they can compete with the best.”

The youngest of the USSDA Lions can take pride in their effort this weekend walking away from three matches exhibiting strong play against worthy opponents. The U-14s will look to build upon their important experience in North Carolina this Saturday as they head to Clearwater to face Chargers Soccer Club.
