Traveling Supporters’ Guide: Philadelphia

Orlando City will be traveling up to Chester, Pennsylvania to close out their inaugural MLS season and to take a stab at their final chance for a post-season playoff stint. While there will be an anticipated wait for this Sunday evening kick-off, there is plenty for the traveling supporters to do as they prepare for what could be an attacking demolition from the Lions.

The Venue

The Philadelphia Union lay their welcome mat at PPL Park in Chester, right on the bank of the Delaware River. With a capacity of 18,500, this soccer-specified stadium has hosted CONCACAF Gold Cup games and All-Star games since its completion in 2010. The beautiful view of Commodore Barry Bridge will provide the perfect background for Orlando’s final MLS game.

 

Sights to See

Liberty Bell
"Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof.” Located in the National Historic Park, the Liberty Bell is a must-see of Philadelphia. The history contained within the Liberty Bell is so rich and interesting, it gives a direct insight into the United Stated and its founding.

Eastern State Penitentiary
The Eastern State Penitentiary is a former Prison that opened in 1829 and spawned from the mind of Benjamin Franklin himself. This attraction is open during the day and shows the how it was operated when it was up and running. If the spooky and spiritual is more your style, they currently offer a nighttime attraction named Terror Behind the Walls. This ghostly visit will leave you with chills.

Franklin Institute
Named after Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is a science museum and center of science education and research. This museum will submerge you into the historical infatuation as it is one of the oldest centers of science education and development in the United States.

American Sardine Bar
Located at Point Breeze, American Sardine bar and restaurant offers a rotating selection of microbrews and a delicious menu of sandwiches. Open until 2am, it has a beer selection that will satisfy any “brew-head”, and the sandwich menu to please the critics.

Khyber Pass Pub
Included in Esqurie’s Best Bars in America, Khyber Pass Pub is a great place for City fans to stop in for a cold-drink. Located in Old City, this pub is conveniently placed in the heart of Philadelphia .

Pat’s King Of Steaks
The argument of “Best Philly in Philly” will be the talk of Philadelphia visitors for a long time to come. There are so many restaurants and street vendors to choose from, but one of the most notorious Philly cheesesteaks can be found at Pat’s King of Steaks. Located on 1237 E. Passyunk Ave., where Passyunk Ave. and Wharton St. meet, this is a must for any Philly lover. Officially opening in 1930, Pat’s started as a hot dog stand in South Philly. Pat’s is open 24 hours to fill your Philly Cheesesteak craving any time, day or night.

UPDATE: June 10, 2020 - Major League Soccer announced it will restart the 2020 season with all 26 MLS clubs competing in the MLS is Back Tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida beginning July 8. Upon completion of the tournament, MLS plans to continue its regular season with a revised schedule in home markets. The revised schedule may see certain matches from the original 2020 MLS regular season schedule being cancelled or rescheduled. The final number of matches and the schedule for the remainder of the 2020 MLS regular season and related ticket policies will be announced in the coming weeks.
