OCF Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hope Hike 2014

Today the Orlando City Foundation visited City Hall, as the city kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in style. Around 100 guests, dressed in festive pink attire, gathered together to hear testimonies and raise awareness regarding breast cancer. Courtesy of Orlando Health and The UF Health Cancer Center, guests were reminded how important self-examination is and that staying routine with your check-ups are the best policies regarding early detection.

Community Relations Director Kay Rawlins and the Orlando City Foundation donated a check for $7,500 to Women Playing for T.I.M.E., a Women's Charity group that partners with Orlando Health to support Women and families who deal with cancer.

Guests then participated in a 'Hope Hike' that took them from the steps of City Hall down Orange Avenue to the Cancer Center. The reception the walkers received from passing cars and walking bystanders brought choruses of cheers and a celebration of unity.

Guests were greeted with beverages and breakfast snacks at the finish line of their walk, after having a “Rocky” moment in the final stretch whilst climbing the center's stairs. The day itself is a celebration, a reminder and an outreach. Together, the city of Orlando is making strides to drastically cut the numbers of those affected by breast cancer.
