W-League Recap: Following The Pride In The Land Down Under

W-league recap

During this past weekend, the Westfield W-League kicked off in Australia. Many Pride players have signed on or were loaned to Australian sides for the NWSL offseason. Here is a recap of how their teams did in Week 1.

Melbourne City FC vs. Newcastle Jets

Australian internationals Laura Alleway and Steph Catley returned to Melbourne City FC, where they won the W-League title last season. They beat the Newcastle Jets 1-0 in their first match of the season, with the lone goal coming from Tabain in the 8th minute. They will go on to face Canberra United on Friday at 11:00pm EST.

Brisbane Roar FC vs. Sydney FC

The Brisbane Roar earned their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Sydney FC on Saturday, November 5th. Maddy Evans is spending her first season in the W-League with the Brisbane Roar. Sydney FC took an early lead with a goal from Caitlin Foord, but Brisbane made a quick comeback with two goals from Katrina Gorry and Allira Toby. They will face Perth Glory FC on Saturday, November 12th at 3:00am EST.

Adelaide United vs. Melbourne Victory

Adelaide United earned a 3-3 draw against Melbourne Victory for their first match of the year. Brazilian international Monica is making her first appearance in the W-League for Adelaide United. She earned a goal in her first appearance with the team, scoring in the 74th minute and giving Adelaide a temporary lead. Due to the odd number of teams in the league, Adelaide United will not play next weekend.

Canberra United

Canberra United has yet to play their first match of the season, as there are an odd number of teams in the W-League, and thus, someone had to be left out of week one. Pride Forward Jasmyne Spencer has signed with Canberra United. They will play their first match this weekend against Melbourne City FC. Spencer will face her Pride teammates Alleway and Catley.
